Click to Call in India: 3 Types, a 10-Minute Test, a 7-Day Check
Click to call starts a phone call with one tap. Businesses choose between a tel: link, a callback form and a team dialer, depending on whether visitors or staff make the call.

Key takeaways
- 01Choose by who makes the call. Use a tel: link when visitors on phones call you, a callback form for visitors on laptops, and a team dialer when your staff call leads.
- 02
Write every Indian mobile tel: link as
tel:+91followed by the ten digits, with no spaces. In our check on 10 October 2026, 9 of the 17 sites that publish a tel: link had at least one link that breaks the rule in the source check below. - 03A tap is not a call. Count calls received, not button taps, before you judge whether a button works.
- 04If your team calls leads, test the dialer on 10 real leads. Every call should be logged, recorded and open to a note.

A phone number on a website works when tapped on a phone and often does nothing when clicked on a laptop. In September 2026, 22.1% of web traffic in India came from desktop computers, according to Statcounter, so a sizeable share of visitors may click your number and get no response.
The silence is the problem. The visitor leaves, and the click never shows up in a call log. Businesses then blame the advert or the page, when the cause may be a link written wrongly or the wrong kind of click to call for the job.
This page helps you choose the right kind and gives the one-line code that dials correctly. It ends with a 10-minute test and a seven-day measure, and shows what we found when we read the phone links on Indian business websites.
What is click to call, and which of the three types fits your business?
Click to call is any link, button, form or app feature that starts a phone call without anyone dialling the number by hand. Pick by who makes the call: a visitor on your website needs a tel: link or a callback form, and your own staff need a team dialer.
A tel: link is a web link whose address starts with tel:. It hands the number to the phone's dialer. A callback form asks the visitor for their number and you ring them. A team dialer is a calling feature inside an app. Staff tap a saved contact and the app logs the call.
| Feature | tel: link | Callback form | Team dialer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who makes the call | The visitor | You, after the visitor submits | Your staff |
| Works on | Phones; laptops only with a calling program set up | Any device | Staff phones with the app |
| Cost | Free (one line of page code) | A form tool plus staff time | A monthly subscription |
| What you learn | Taps, not calls | A name and number for every request | Every call logged, recorded, with notes |
| Fails when | The number format is wrong, or the visitor is on a laptop | Nobody rings back fast | Staff do not use the app |
Most businesses start with a tel: link, and that is where most of the breakage sits.
Why does a click-to-call link do nothing on a laptop?
A tel: link does nothing on many laptops because a laptop has no phone to hand the number to. The click works only if a calling program on the laptop is set to handle tel: links.

Work laptops add a second cause. Microsoft's support staff state that Teams does not support external tel: or callto: links (Microsoft Q&A). In our experience, a link that stops working is more often a change on the laptop than on the website.
Our recommendation: show the number as readable text beside every button, and offer a callback form to visitors on laptops. A callback form is only as good as your reply time, so read Lead Response Time: What the 5-Minute Rule Really Shows before you rely on one.
Laptop failures are easy to spot. Format failures are not, so we measured them.
How often do Indian business websites write the phone link wrongly?
Of 17 Indian business websites that publish a tel: link, 9 had at least one link that breaks the fail rule in our source check: a space, stray text, a 91 number without +, a + in front of a short code, doubled digits, or a foreign number without its country code. We found this on 10 October 2026.
How we counted. On 10 October 2026 we fetched the home pages of 50 Indian business websites with curl -sL -m 20 -A "Mozilla/5.0 (Linux; Android 13) Chrome/120 Mobile". That follows redirects, allows 20 seconds and presents a mobile Chrome browser identity. We deleted HTML comments and read every href="tel:..." in the page code. 34 pages loaded and 16 were blocked or failed. Of the 34, 17 held at least one non-empty tel: link and 17 held none; some of those may add the button with scripts after the page loads. The result for every site is in the list below. TalkEasy publishes this page, and our own home page was one of the 50; it held no tel: link in its page code. The sites are large brands, not a random sample, so read the result as a pattern, not a national rate.
The 17 sites held 59 distinct tel: links:
| Type of link | Links |
|---|---|
Valid: | 13 |
Valid: | 2 |
Local form: digits with no | 28 |
| Faulty | 16 |
Total | 59 |
The 16 faulty links break down as 4 with a space, 4 with a 91 number and no +, 4 with a foreign number and no country code, 2 with stray text, 1 with a + before a short code and 1 with doubled digits. Six of the 9 faulty sites would dial the wrong digits. The other three contain only a space.
Examples, each in the page code of the site named:
- Kia India:
tel://1800-108-5000Email:[email protected], where an email address is glued into the phone link. - Apollo Hospitals:
tel:+1066. The+turns the four-digit short code 1066 into an international number. - PolicyBazaar:
tel:911246656507and two similar links. The 91 has no+. - Aster Hospitals:
tel:91-9848054321, again with no+.
The internet standard for tel: addresses, RFC 3966, says globally valid numbers begin with +, allows -, ., ( and ) as separators, and forbids spaces. It asks local numbers to carry a phone-context parameter, so local-form links are not globally valid. We did not count them as faults because they dial inside India. A phone given 911246656507 dials those digits as typed, which is not a valid Indian number.
What does a tel: link that always dials look like?
A reliable tel: link for an Indian mobile starts tel:+91 and continues with digits only. This is the full code:
<a href="tel:+919876543210">Call us: 98765 43210</a>
The readable number in the link text can have a space, because the ban on spaces applies to the tel: address, not the text. For other numbers:
- Landline. Write
+91, then the STD (Subscriber Trunk Dialling, the area) code without its leading 0, then the number. A Bengaluru landline written 080 1234 5678 becomestel:+918012345678. - Toll-free 1800 numbers. Write
tel:1800and the remaining digits with no spaces, then test it on your own phone. - Short codes such as 1066. Write the digits alone, without
+. - Nothing extra in the link. Keep tracking text out of the address. Count taps with an analytics click event (a tracking tag that records each button press) instead. This is our recommendation.
A correct link still tells you nothing about whether anyone called.
When does a sales team need a team dialer instead of a tel: link?
A sales team needs a team dialer when staff, not visitors, start the calls. A tel: link cannot log a call, attach a note or count team calls, because it only opens the phone's dialer. A team dialer keeps a record of every call against the contact.

Our Business Dialer is a click-to-call tool built into the TalkEasy app. Your team calls contacts directly, without switching apps or dialling by hand. Every call is logged automatically and can be recorded, and staff add a note against a call once it ends. All paid plans include unlimited team members and shared call history, and the analytics dashboard shows call volume and team performance. The Android app needs Android 7.0 or later. For a plain-language explainer of the category, see What Is a Business Dialer App?.
As of October 2026, our Pro plan is ₹999 + GST (Goods and Services Tax) a month, about ₹12,000 + GST a year. It includes unlimited users and 3 talktime hours a day, shared by all users. Extra talktime is ₹49 + GST an hour. Enterprise is quote-only and includes unlimited users and talktime.
Work out your talk time first (our model): callers × calls per day × minutes per call. Example with assumed numbers: 10 callers × 15 calls × 2 minutes = 300 minutes, or 5 hours a day. That is 2 hours above the 3 included, so 2 × ₹49 = ₹98 a day, or ₹2,548 over 26 working days. With the subscription, that comes to about ₹3,500 + GST a month.
MyOperator's Sedan plan costs ₹5,000 a month for 10 users, billed annually, which is ₹60,000 upfront plus GST (₹5,000 × 12), according to its price page in October 2026. The plans include different amounts of usage, so compare included calling before you compare price. MyOperator also offers multi-level IVR (interactive voice response, the "press 1 for sales" menus), APIs and WhatsApp tools. If you need those, weigh them.
Calling leads also brings rules on numbers and recording, which Outbound Calling in India: Rules, Numbers and Recording Setups covers.
How do you test click to call in 10 minutes?
Run these four checks in one sitting, each with a pass and a fail:
Phone tap
On an Android phone and an iPhone, tap every number on your site. Pass: the dialer opens with the full number including +91 after one tap. Fail: an error, a wrong number, or a page that loads instead.Laptop click
Click every number in Chrome on a laptop. Pass: a calling program opens, or the number is readable text with a callback form beside it. Fail: nothing happens and there is no other way to reach you.Source check
Right-click a number, choose Inspect, and read the
href(the link's address attribute). Pass: mobile and landline numbers readtel:+91and digits only, 1800 numbers readtel:1800and digits, and short codes are digits only. Fail: a space, stray text, an empty address, doubled digits, a 91 number with no+, a 0 after+91, a+in front of a short code, or a foreign number without its country code.Ten-lead dialer test
Tap 10 real leads in your team dialer. Pass: 10 of 10 calls appear in the log, are recorded where you have switched recording on, and accept a note. Fail: any call missing from the log.
Follow-up measure, over seven days. Work out the site call rate from the section above. Pass: calls are at least about half of taps. Fail: calls are far below taps.
Which 50 websites did we check, and what did each show?
We checked the home pages below on 10 October 2026. Each line gives the number of tel: links found in the page code and, for faulty sites, how many were faulty and why. Domains are plain text, not links.
Faulty, 9 sites: kia.com/in (2 links; 2, stray text), apollohospitals.com (6; 2, a + before short code 1066 and a space), policybazaar.com (3; 3, 91 without +), asterhospitals.in (17; 1, 91 without +), ozonetel.com (3; 1, doubled digits), servetel.in (6; 4, foreign numbers without country code), mahindralifespaces.com (1; 1, space), godrejproperties.com (3; 1, space), ikontel.com (2; 1, space).
Valid, 8 sites: sobha.com (1 link), narayanahealth.org (1), medanta.org (3), cloudninecare.com (3), allen.ac.in (3), oyorooms.com (2), hdfcbank.com (1), sbilife.co.in (2).
Loaded, no tel: link in the page code, 17 sites: dlf.in, lodhagroup.com, upgrad.com (an empty tel: placeholder filled by script), amity.edu, marutisuzuki.com, hyundai.com/in/en, auto.mahindra.com, lemontreehotels.com, treebo.com, bajajfinserv.in, fabindia.com, urbancompany.com, practo.com, zoho.com/in, callhippo.com, talk.groweasy.ai, frejun.com.

Frequently asked questions
Add a Button block, then paste tel:+91 and your ten-digit number, with no spaces, into its link field. Tapping it opens the dialer on Android and iPhone. Show the number as text too, so laptop visitors can read it.
A tel: link is free, because it is one line of page code. A callback form needs a form tool and quick call-backs. A team dialer is a subscription; as of October 2026 our Pro plan is ₹999 + GST a month, and TalkEasy pricing has the details.
Calling from your CRM (customer relationship management software) needs our Enterprise plan, which includes a custom CRM integration. Pro does not include integrations, so Pro staff dial from the TalkEasy app instead. For CRM routes in detail, see Zoho CRM Telephony in India: 3 Routes, Costs and a 10-Call Test.
