Missed Call Alert Service for Business: How It Works and Cost

A missed call alert service for business gives you a phone number that customers ring and hang up on: the call cuts after a ring, the caller's number is logged, and your system follows up by SMS, WhatsApp or a callback. Published prices run from ₹1,000 a month on Vi Business to ₹5,000 a month for 2 lakh missed calls on Knowlarity, before GST.
What you pay depends on three things: how many missed calls you expect, whether you send an SMS or WhatsApp message to each caller, and whether you also want missed calls on your main business line followed up.
Only want missed call alerts on your own phone? That is a free or low-cost carrier feature, not a business service. It tells you about calls that could not reach you because your phone was off or out of network.
- Airtel: Smart Missed Call Alerts are free for all prepaid and postpaid customers. Turn them on or off in the Airtel Thanks app under Account > Settings, and see them under Manage > missed call alerts (Airtel FAQ).
- Vi: send the SMS ACT MCI to 54300 to switch on Missed Call Information (Vi FAQ). Vi also sells a Missed Call Alerts recharge pack for prepaid numbers.
- Jio: Jio's help pages list Missed Call Alert as a value-added service on Jio numbers (Jio help) but give no activation code. Check the MyJio app or ask Jio customer care.
Play Store apps such as "Missed Call Alert" only remind you about missed calls and unread messages already on your phone. None of these options captures leads for a business.

How does a missed call number work?
A missed call number is a dedicated number, usually a 10-digit mobile or landline-series virtual number or a 1800 toll-free number, that never picks up. Knowlarity describes it plainly: "The moment the call lands on the missed call number, it is disconnected" (Knowlarity).
- You publish the number on an ad, hoarding, packaging, website or WhatsApp status.
- The customer dials it. The call rings once or twice and drops, so the caller is not charged.
- The system logs the caller's number and time, and often the campaign the number belongs to.
- A follow-up fires automatically: an SMS, a WhatsApp message, an email, a callback, or a lead in your CRM or dashboard.
- Your team works the list, usually by calling back the people who asked for it.
Vi Business, for example, describes its Pre-Call Notification service as one that records missed-call details on a 10-digit mobile number and shares them in a self-care portal or over an API (Vi Business CPaaS).
What happens after the missed call: SMS, WhatsApp or callback?
Each follow-up channel has its own cost and its own rules in India.
- SMS. Fast and works on any phone. A follow-up SMS from a business is commercial communication, so it must go out on a registered sender header (TRAI TCCCPR amendment, 2025) using a registered content template, and any link or call-back number inside it must be whitelisted with your operator (TRAI direction, 20 Aug 2024). Knowlarity charges 16 paise per SMS on its missed-call plan.
- WhatsApp. Richer: you can send a brochure, price list or location. Automated messages need the WhatsApp Business Platform (API) through a provider, and a business-started message uses an approved template billed per message by Meta plus any provider markup. MyOperator, for example, lists ₹0.95 per marketing message and ₹0.13 per utility message (pricing).
- Callback. The most personal option when a staff member rings back, because the caller talks to a person and it is a one-to-one conversation. A callback that software dials on its own, whether it connects an AI voice or a staff member, is an "A2P call" under TRAI's Third Amendment of 18 September 2026. Once that part takes effect, 60 days after the amendment is published in the Gazette, senders must declare A2P calls and their calling numbers to their operator in advance, or the calls are treated as spam (TRAI PR 119/2026).
One grey area: the 2026 amendment lets a business contact someone for 7 days after that person makes an enquiry "in writing or through digital means", kept "in a verifiable form" (TRAI regulation text). It does not say whether a missed call counts. Keep follow-ups one-to-one and about what the caller asked for.
What can a business use a missed call number for?
- Lead capture from offline ads. Print a number on a newspaper ad, hoarding or flyer. Each missed call is a lead with a working mobile number and a known source.
- Mobile number verification. Ask a new customer to give a missed call from their registered number. It proves they own it without an OTP.
- Brochure or price list on request. "Give a missed call to get our fee structure on SMS" works well for coaching centres, schools, real estate projects and clinics.
- Callback requests. "Give us a missed call and we'll call you back" suits customers who don't want to pay for a call or wait in a queue.
- Contests, polls and feedback. One number per option makes counting votes or ratings simple.
- Status and balance enquiries. Banks and service firms reply to a missed call with an account or order update by SMS.

Pick by volume. Vi's entry plan is the cheapest way to start. Knowlarity's flat ₹5,000 covers up to 2 lakh missed calls and bundles cheap SMS, so it suits big campaigns. Exotel and MyOperator make sense when you also want a full business phone system, since missed calls come inside their plans.
What does a missed call campaign cost? A worked example
Prices below are from the providers' pages, checked 23 Sep 2026. A coaching centre prints a missed-call number in a newspaper ad and on two hoardings. In one month, 4,000 people give a missed call, and each gets one SMS with the fee structure.

On the listed rates alone, Vi's entry plan stays cheaper until roughly 70,000 missed calls a month. Above that, Knowlarity's flat ₹5,000 for 2 lakh calls costs less. Add your SMS cost to both before deciding.
