A second call can start from very different places. The lead never picked up, asked you to ring later, wanted to think it over, balked at the price, received a quote, or asked for details on WhatsApp. One generic script cannot open all of those, which is why "just checking in" is such a common fallback.
The calendar matters as much as the wording. TRAI, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, announced an amendment to its commercial communication rules on 18 September 2026. Under it, a business may contact a customer on the basis of a written or digital enquiry for seven days from that enquiry.

Choose the opening by the last outcome, then keep it to one reason and one question. A follow up call continues a conversation that has already started, so the opening must show you remember it. Read each line aloud in under 20 seconds and replace the brackets with the lead's own details.

The bracketed fact in the price row must be one you have checked: a real option, a real inclusion, a real date. A made-up discount ends the lead's trust in every later call.
What do you say when a lead says "I'll think about it" or "call me later"?
Agree a specific time before you hang up, and ask which part the lead is still weighing. "Call me later" becomes a booked callback only when it has a day and an hour. "I'll think about it" becomes useful only when it has a name: price, timing or fit.
Do not wait for the lead to get back to you. Fix the time yourself:
- "Call me later": "Of course. Would morning or evening suit you better? Then I'll call you on [day] at [time]."
- "I'll think about it": "That's fair. Which part do you want to be sure about: price, timing or fit? I'll call you on [day] with an answer on that."
The second line removes the surprise. A lead who has agreed to Friday's call does not feel chased when it comes.
Then send a short WhatsApp within the hour: "Hi [Name], [You] from [Company]. As discussed, I'll call you on [day] at [time]." Ask the lead to reply "ok". Our recommendation: get that reply. TRAI's rule counts an enquiry only if it is made in writing or through digital means, and a spoken "call me later" leaves no such record. How do you follow up without sounding pushy or just "checking in"?
Give the lead a reason to pick up that they did not have before: an answer, a fact or an open slot. Calls sound pushy when nothing new is in them and they arrive at the same hour each time. Run each opener through these four tests before you dial.

Underline what the lead did not have on the last call. Pass: you can underline an answer, a figure or a time slot. Fail: the only reason is "following up" or "checking in".One question
Count the question marks. Pass: exactly one, and the lead can answer in a sentence or a yes or no. Fail: two asks, or "What do you think?".Their words

How many follow up calls fit inside TRAI's seven-day enquiry window?
Five touches fit comfortably: calls on days 0, 3, 5 and 6, and a WhatsApp on day 1. Under the amendment TRAI announced on 18 September 2026, a business may contact a customer on the basis of the customer's written or digital enquiry for seven days from that enquiry. Counting the enquiry date as day 0, the plan finishes on day 6.

Three points about the rule:
- Voice calls are covered. TRAI's regulations define a commercial communication as "any voice call or message" whose main purpose is to inform about, advertise or solicit business.
- The enquiry needs a record. It must be written or digital and kept in a verifiable form by you. TRAI states that the provision is intended mainly for e-commerce and e-service platforms. A web form, an email or a message from the lead is the clearest case. A spoken request is not.
- Day 6 is our cut-off. Day 0 is the enquiry date, and finishing on day 6 leaves a day of margin inside the seven days. That is our counting convention, not TRAI's.
A worked example shows why a long plan struggles. Take a plan with one touch every second day for three weeks. It has 11 touches (days 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17, 19 and 21), and only three (days 1, 3 and 5) fall before the day 6 cut-off. That is our count.
Calls after the seven days need another basis. As of October 2026, the regulations recognise these:
- Explicit consent. The 2018 regulations define it as consent verified directly from the recipient in a robust and verifiable manner and recorded by a Consent Registrar.
- Consent you already hold. TRAI's announcement says such legacy consents are valid only where they were obtained through verifiable means and registered on the operators' digital platform.
- Calls that are not promotional. The 2018 regulations define a transactional voice call as one that is not promotional in nature and gives alerts to the business's own customers or account holders.
A lead with no written enquiry and no recorded consent should not be called after the seven days. Our recommendation: also check each number against the Do Not Disturb register, TRAI's record of customers' choices to block commercial calls, and do not call a number whose owner has blocked them.
Log every call with a disposition code, a short label such as "No answer" or "Callback requested" that records how the call ended. When should you stop calling a lead, and what is the last call?
Stop after the last touch on your cadence, or at once if the lead asks you to. The last call says that it is the last, leaves a way back and records the outcome. A number that keeps ringing people who did not want the call is the one that draws complaints.
The last-call line:
- English: "I'll stop calling after this unless you'd like me to continue. If things change, message me on this number."
- Hinglish: "Iske baad main call nahi karunga/karungi, jab tak aap na kahein. Kuch badle toh isi number par message kar dijiye."
The stakes are real. The amendment provides that action against a sender is triggered by 3 or more unique complaints within ten days when the sender's number is also flagged by the operator's AI-based detection system. The earlier threshold was 5 or more complaints in ten days. File the lead under the right code, and record a do-not-call request the same day.

Does the same follow up script work for old customers and satisfaction calls?
Yes, with a changed reason. The structure of one new reason, one question and a fixed next step stays the same. For an old customer the reason is what has changed since they bought, and for a satisfaction call it is whether the problem was fixed. Keep offers out of satisfaction calls, because TRAI treats calls that are promotional in nature differently from those that are not.
- Old customer: "Hello [Name], [You] from [Company]. You bought [item] from us in [month], and I have one option that may help with [their earlier concern]. Shall I explain it in two minutes?"
- Satisfaction call: "Hello [Name], [You] from [Company]. We fixed [issue] on [date]. Has it stayed fixed since then?"

Say "Understood, I won't call again", log it as do-not-call the same day, and make no further commercial calls or messages. Under TRAI's February 2025 amendment, a sender may re-acquire consent from a customer who has revoked it only after 90 days from the date of revoking it or opting out.
